Purdue alum Martin moves to Cal

Former Purdue player and assistant Cuonzo Martin will be Cal's coach.

A little more than a month ago, many in Knoxville wanted head coach Cuonzo Martin out of Tennessee. One remarkable NCAA Tournament run later, they would take that back.

Another disciple of Purdue great Gene Keady is moving on, as Martin will become head coach at California, as announced by the school on Tuesday.

Martin, a 1995 alum of Purdue, got his college coaching start under Keady, the coach who recruited him to the program as a player. Before rejoining Purdue, he spent a year coaching at West Lafayette High School, that following two years playing in the NBA and one in Italy.

Before the Volunteers played in the Sweet 15 in Indianapolis, Martin spoke of his gratitude for Keady.

"I'll never forget when he came to my home in East St. Louis, a lot of coaches come in, sell me different t things, talk about different things, the things that Coach Keady talked about was if you go to class every day you'll get a degree," Martin said.

"And at that time I wouldn't say I appreciate it, but my mom, she liked it and she respected that and she said, I think you need to go to Purdue. It's probably one of the greatest decisions I made in my life because Coach was a good man. He was a fair man."

Martin has a head-coaching record of 124-82, and was named the Missouri Valley Conference Coach of the Year in 2011 with Missouri State.
