In game one of a doubleheader, Minch gave Purdue a chance to win, but the bats let him down. Ohio State earned an 8-3 victory over the Boilermakers.
Minch (L, 2-3) worked into the sixth inning with Purdue trailing 4-1, but was pulled after a leadoff single. His pitch count had already reached 110 pitches. Mike Lutz surrendered three runs in relief and Purdue was never able to rally back.
Brad Goldberg (W, 3-0) kept the Boilermakers' bats quiet in five innings of work, allowing just one earned run. Ryan Riga (S, 1) worked four innings in relief and was credited with the save.
Ohio State shortstop Kirby Pellant finished the game with four hits and an RBI while first baseman Brad Halberg added three hits and knocked in three runs. Purdue had just four hits to its credit, two coming from shortstop Jake Hansen.
The three-game series at Alexander Field was moved to just two days. Sunday's contest was moved to Saturday in order to avoid conflicts with weather.
